Dedicated to preserving the history of Grass Lake’s interurban railway, this museum showcases artifacts and stories from the era when electric railways connected Michigan’s towns and cities. The arrival of the railroad in 1842 was a turning point for Grass Lake, spurring growth and development. However, it wasn’t without controversy. In the 1850s, the “Great Railroad Conspiracy” arose when local farmers clashed with railroad officials over cattle wandering onto the tracks. When the railroad refused to compensate for lost livestock, farmers retaliated by setting fires and placing obstacles on the tracks. This led to legal battles and new railroad safety regulations, including the requirement for bells, whistles, and fencing along the rails. Today, the Lost Railway Museum preserves these stories, ensuring that Grass Lake’s railroad legacy is remembered.
